1. Start at the official source.
Use AnnualCreditReport.com to request reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Follow the identity-verification instructions on the provider’s own pages. A credit report and a credit score serve different purposes.
2. Verify directly and securely.
Each bureau may use a different verification flow. Supply identity information only through the official report provider. This BAS lesson does not request your Social Security number, date of birth, passcodes, or report files.
3. Save each complete report.
Use the available download or print option. When needed, choose Print → Save as PDF. Open the saved file immediately, confirm every page and history table is included, and record the bureau and report date.
4. Keep an original and a working copy.
Name files consistently, such as TransUnion_Report_YYYY-MM-DD.pdf. Annotate a working copy and preserve the original. Keep later responses and reports alongside it so you can compare changes.
5. Review what the records actually show.
Move into the Credit Report Guide to inspect specific fields, organize supporting evidence, and understand the dispute process.
Free reports are also available through official phone and mail request methods. Check current options through the official source or CFPB report-access guidance.
